Questions about business VoIP
Everything people ask us before they switch, answered plainly.
What is VoIP?
VoIP (voice over internet protocol) means your business phone calls travel over the internet instead of old copper lines. You keep your numbers, your phones work anywhere, and it usually costs much less.
How much does Pacific VoIP cost?
For a 10-person office on 3CX Pro, about $262 a month all in, or $26.17 per user. Use the solutions builder for your exact price.
Can I keep my phone numbers?
Yes. We port numbers from TELUS, Bell, Rogers, Shaw, Videotron, SaskTel, Eastlink and others. Porting is included with setup.
Do you serve my city?
We serve businesses across Canada, with certified local installers in the 55 cities on our coverage page and remote setup everywhere else.
Is there a contract?
The 3CX licence is billed yearly. After that, there is no long-term contract and you can leave with your numbers.
Who is Pacific VoIP?
Pacific VoIP is part of the VancouverCabling.ca group of companies, focused only on business phone systems for Canadian organisations.
Does 911 work?
Yes. Every number we provide has a registered 911 address. VoIP 911 has some limits compared with landlines; read our VoIP 911 guide.
Do I need new phones?
No. Staff can use the free 3CX app on mobiles and computers. Desk phones are optional, and we can often reuse yours.
Is 3CX a good phone system?
3CX is one of the most widely used business phone systems in the world. It is feature-rich, works with almost every desk phone, and its licence is priced by simultaneous calls, which makes it far cheaper than per-user plans as you grow.
Can I get a number in a city where I have no office?
Yes. Your number can be in any Canadian area code we can source, no matter where your staff are. Just keep your 911 address current for the people who use it.
How long does porting take in Canada?
Most local numbers port in 5 to 10 business days. Toll-free numbers and large multi-line ports can take two to four weeks.
What is the difference between SIP trunking and hosted VoIP?
SIP trunking connects a phone system you already own to the phone network. Hosted VoIP gives you the phone system itself, in the cloud. If your PBX is old or out of support, hosted is usually better value.
How much does a toll-free number cost in Canada?
With us, $3.15 a month plus about 5.7 cents a minute. Big carriers often charge several times that per minute.
Is virtual fax secure for health records?
Faxes are transmitted over the phone network as usual and then delivered to your email. We recommend a secure mailbox and Canadian hosting, which we provide.
Is it legal to record business calls in Canada?
Generally yes, under PIPEDA, if you tell callers and say why. Our greeting can play a short notice. Check with your own legal adviser for your industry.
Do I need a Teams Phone licence?
It depends on how you want to integrate. We will look at your Microsoft 365 plan and recommend the cheapest setup that does what you need.
How many options should a phone menu have?
Three or four is ideal. Put the most common reason to call first.
What is the difference between a ring group and a queue?
A ring group rings several phones once. A queue holds callers in line until someone is free, with announcements and callbacks.
Can I text from my landline number?
If we port it to us and it is a standard local number, usually yes.
Do I have to buy phones?
No. The 3CX app on mobiles and computers is free. Phones are optional.
Do you install outside the Lower Mainland?
Yes. We serve every city listed on our coverage page with certified local installers.
Is support per user?
No. One flat price covers your whole phone system.
